Can you lay panels over underfloor heating?

More and more people are opting for modern heating installations, such as underfloor heating. This comes with many benefits, such as greater aesthetics of rooms and more effective heating. However, there are still some doubts regarding which types of surfaces work best to cover such an installation. Just a few years ago, only tiles were suitable for this purpose, as they conduct heat perfectly, while being insensitive to temperature changes. Nowadays, the choice is much larger. Thanks to the efforts of manufacturers, there is nothing to stop you from using floor panels with underfloor heating. However, it is important to know that not all types of panels are equally suitable for this purpose. In this article, we will explain why this is the case and also advise on which panels to choose for underfloor heating. Following our tips will help create an effective and safe heating system.

Can you lay any floor panels over underfloor heating?

Such installations, commonly referred to as underfloor heating systems, are increasingly finding applications beyond kitchens and bathrooms – rooms where they have been used for many years. Previous restrictions were due to the fact that in living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways, the floor is usually made of materials that do not conduct heat well, and may even be damaged during heating. However, in recent years, both the technology of underfloor heating and the adaptation of panels for such solutions have developed. The question of whether you can lay panels over underfloor heating depends on several factors. It is important to remember that underfloor heating systems are divided into several types, the most popular being electric and water-based. In both cases, standard panels from reputable manufacturers will work well as a surface, but it should be noted that electric heating must be based on low-temperature heating films.

What floor panels for underfloor heating?

Some manufacturers provide information on their products regarding whether panels can be laid over underfloor heating, and if so, for what type of installation. If this issue is not addressed, it does not rule out such use. In that case, it is important to know which parameters we need to check. First of all, attention should be paid to the type of material from which the panels are made. There are four types to choose from: wooden, cork, laminated, and vinyl. The first two are suitable only for water-based heating. When opting for electric underfloor heating, one should choose one of the other two types. These types of panels also offer a wide selection in terms of color and design, and they look really elegant. However, it is important to limit oneself to the highest quality products that can withstand temperature changes well. Regardless of which floor panels we choose for underfloor heating, they should be as thin as possible to conduct heat better. Other parameters do not directly affect the effectiveness of heating installations, but it is advisable to choose the most durable panels with an abrasion class of AC 3 or AC 4, as well as a usability class of 31-32.

Floor panels with underfloor heating – what else should you know?

The installation of underfloor heating and laying panels are two separate processes that require close cooperation. After installing the heating system, one must proceed to cover it with a top layer. In the case of underfloor heating, it is important to remember the process of extended floor heating. This process involves increasing the temperature by 1 degree every 24 hours until reaching a floor temperature of 28°C, and then lowering the floor temperature to the planned level. Floor panels are installed directly on the heating system based on heating film.
It is advisable to choose which panels for electric underfloor heating will be laid from the very beginning so that the entire installation is prepared properly.
These tasks should be carried out by qualified specialists, which will reduce the risk of potential failures in the future. Equally important is, of course, the use of such heating. When opting for panels, care should be taken not to exceed the appropriate temperature for them. Rooms can be heated to around 24°C, while the surface temperature of the floor must not exceed 23-27°C. It is also important to avoid excessive covering of the surface. It is best to completely avoid carpets and rugs, and as a last resort, only cover the most frequently used areas. Furniture with legs will definitely work better than those that rest entirely on the floor.
Remember, it is prohibited to install fixed furniture, thick carpets, pet beds, and furniture without legs in areas with installed underfloor heating. Failure to adhere to these rules results in overheating of the heating system and damage to the top layer.
Vinyl flooring and underfloor heating with heating film
Vinyl panels are a top layer that works perfectly as a finish for floors with underfloor heating, but it should be noted that the underlay used under vinyl panels differs from the traditional one. The characteristics of the underlay for vinyl floors are specified by the floor manufacturer, and only the underlay offered by the vinyl panel manufacturer should be used. The thickness of the underlay should be at least 3mm due to the requirement for cable routing in the insulation layer.
In summary, the choice of which floor panels for underfloor heating depends on various factors, and it should also be remembered that for the proper functioning of such an installation, several important rules must be followed.
