Electricity Price Reduction 2023. How Much Can You Gain? General information

The draft regulation published at the beginning of this week by the Minister of Climate allows electricity suppliers to reduce electricity prices for households starting from the beginning of 2023. The amount is expected to be lower by 12%. How much can individual consumers gain from this?

Electricity Price Reduction 2023. How Much Can You Gain? Recently, individual consumers have strongly felt the impact of further electricity price increases. The draft regulation may bring joy, as it proposes a reduction of up to 12%. However, to benefit from it, certain criteria must be met.

What is the electricity price reduction?

According to the regulation, the electricity supplier is obliged to reduce the electricity price in households in the settlements for the year 2023. The amount of the reduction is calculated using a simple formula:

Average electricity price x electricity volume

The electricity price refers to the G11 tariff in 2022, which was 0.4140 PLN/kWh. The mentioned volume was 2523 kWh in 2023.

0.4143×2523 = 1044.522

12% of the above result amounts to just over 125 PLN. This will be the discount on electricity in 2023. It should be emphasized that the energy company is obliged to apply this reduction to every point of energy consumption in the household that is covered by a contract with the electricity consumer.

What are the conditions?

To take advantage of the electricity price reduction, no additional applications need to be submitted. Moreover, the energy supplier is obliged to inform consumers about the discount. However, to receive it, one of the following conditions must be met:

  • Reduction of electricity consumption by 5 percent for at least three consecutive months in the first three quarters of 2023;
  • Consent to receive bills in electronic form;
  • Verification and confirmation of personal data with the energy supplier;
  • Consent to receive information about services and products offered by the energy supplier;
  • Having the status of a prosumer of electricity;
  • Issuing a statement that they qualify to benefit from frozen electricity prices under the increased consumption limit;

Meeting one of the above conditions is not difficult, as can be seen. However, if a household does not qualify for the reduction this year for any reason, it will be applied next year. This will be possible only until March 31, 2024.

Lower bills for prosumers

The new regulation also introduces significant changes beneficial for prosumers, i.e., households that produce electricity using photovoltaic installations.

As part of these changes, they are entitled to exemption from fees for exceeding the contractual power and excessive energy consumption. However, exceeding the consumption limit must result from the instructions of network operators or be related to services provided to them. This action aims to support the development of dedicated system services during periods when excessive electricity supply comes from renewable energy sources.

This is a result of the dynamic growth of renewable energy sources in Poland, which causes increasingly frequent periods of electricity oversupply in the power system. A positive effect of the introduced changes is the encouragement to effectively utilize the surplus energy generated from renewable sources without incurring additional costs for the power drawn from the power system by system users.

Who will benefit?

Certainly, every consumer will be pleased with the discount on their electricity bill. However, prosumers will benefit the most. Especially those who regularly consume the energy they obtain from the Sun. How do they do it? One way is to invest in energy storage, but for now, this is quite an expensive investment. Another way is to connect electric floor heating. Heating films and heating mats are a solution that, with proper thermal insulation of the house, will use the electricity produced by photovoltaics and will not expose the owner to unnecessary costs.

Are you wondering if a prosumer can heat their home with solar energy? You can read more about this in the article “Can photovoltaics heat a house?”

Many people at this point will wonder and ask if electric heating can really be cost-effective? The answer is yes. How? The key is insulation and… no costs. With a properly insulated house, infrared heating films can provide heating comfort without consuming huge amounts of electricity. This happens thanks to the unique features of infrared. One of them is the fact that infrared heats objects, not the air. The second is the surface area. The heating film (or mat) creates a huge radiator with the floor, which also heats the house. The last feature of heating films is their reliability. This is a system that has no mechanical parts, so there is nothing to break down. With infrared heating, you don’t worry about waiting for service, inspection, or costly repairs in a few years. This way, you live peacefully enjoying the warmth in your home.
