Heating mats are becoming increasingly popular as external solutions. They not only provide pleasant warmth indoors but also serve to heat various surfaces outside buildings. These include not only driveways and sidewalks but also terraces, stairs, and other areas where there is a risk of slipping.

How do external heating mats work?

External heating mats are constructed from specialized heating cables designed to provide effective heating of surfaces outside buildings. Thanks to their structure, these mats are weather-resistant and effectively eliminate the risk of ice and slippery conditions.

The external heating mat operates at a voltage of 230 V. The heating cables generate heat when current flows through them, which is then transferred to the surface. The benefits of heated stairs and driveways primarily include protection against accumulated snow and ice. External heating mats operate seamlessly, providing exceptional comfort to the user. It is worth considering the installation of these mats during the design phase of a new building. Of course, there is an option to install heating at a later stage, but this may require removing the surface layer.

This investment, like all, involves various expenses. These include the purchase of components, the installation process, and electricity consumption throughout the system's lifespan. The installation of cables in the mesh should be carried out by a qualified electrician with SEP qualifications. Additionally, the cost of the thermostat must be considered, which ranges from 1000 to 2000 PLN. These expenses should also include the purchase of temperature and humidity sensors that automate the heating process according to current weather conditions. Based on available data, it can be stated that the total installation cost for heating paving stones and stairs ranges from 200 to 400 PLN per square meter.

It is important to understand that driveway heating does not operate continuously. The controller immediately turns off the heating when the desired effects on the surface are achieved (signaled by the sensors). Therefore, the total cost of operation during the winter season is favorable. An amount of 300-400 PLN (annually) for electricity should be sufficient to ensure effective protection against icing in a standard single-family home. Compared to the potential health and material costs associated with the absence of such an installation, the mentioned amount is symbolic.
