How to Lay an Electrical Installation in Your Home? Key Information General information

The electrical system in a home must be designed according to the best standards. This is primarily important for the safety of the building's residents, but one should not forget about the comfort of its use. That is why many good practices have been developed, ensuring that the electrical installation in a home meets all requirements. We will present them in this article.

Electrical Installation in a Home – Power Demand

Before starting anything else, one must consider the overall design of the installation. This primarily includes the demand for electrical power. How much will be needed in a given place? It is not enough to estimate this by eye. Calculations must be performed.

This is somewhat difficult because the calculations must take into account all electronic devices that will be in the apartment. The home electrical installation must meet the power demand of the refrigerator, televisions, stoves, computers, and even phones. Moreover, laying the electrical installation in a home cannot stop at the minimum demand. In practice, a more efficient network should be created, as there will certainly be additional, yet unplanned devices in the building in the future.

Designated Zones for Laying Wires

Leading the electrical installation is not a matter of a good idea and originality. One must adhere to rules to ensure safety. One of them is the zones for laying wires described in standard N SEP-E-002. It specifies the exact dimensions for placing cables.

Horizontal zones with a width of 30 cm are divided into lower (SH-d), middle (SH-s), and upper (SH-g). According to this rule, the electrical installation in the apartment should be located – respectively – 15-45 cm and 90-120 cm above the finished floor surface or 15-45 cm below the finished ceiling surface. In turn, vertical zones for laying wires with a width of 20 cm are divided into window (SH-o), corner (SH-k), and door (SH-d) zones. In each case, a distance of 10-30 cm must be maintained from the edge of the window frame, door, or the line of wall convergence.

Laying Electrical Installation – Basic Rules

At this point, it is worth mentioning the basic rules for creating the installation. The distribution of the electrical installation must involve laying wires parallel to the walls and floors. This is to remember their location after covering. The domestic flush-mounted electrical system should use flat multi-core cables. They are mounted using brackets or plates. And how to do surface-mounted electrical work in a home? It is best to use flexible plastic pipes for this purpose. They cannot be mounted at an angle.

There are four ways to install electrical systems in a home. We have just mentioned two of them. The flush-mounted method requires the use of round wires. The distribution of the electrical installation then occurs through corrugated pipes (peszel). It also requires chiseling grooves in the wall and ceiling at least 1 cm deep.

The surface-mounted electrical installation is the easiest to install. Wires are not hidden in the wall but in special masking strips. In this case, the installation is laid right by the floor so that the strips do not stand out. This solution is primarily used in older buildings.

Finally, there is the third method, which is the plastered one. How to make an electrical installation in a home this way? It is enough to lay it on the wall and then cover it with a layer of plaster, which usually amounts to 1 cm. Such a home electrical installation is popular in new buildings.

How else can one carry out the laying of electrical installation in a home? There remains one unutilized space, namely the floor. It is often chosen due to the ease of hiding wires. Domestic electrical systems under the floor require only additional corrugated pipes that protect the cables from mechanical damage.

How to Make Electrical Work in a Home? Socket Placement in the Bedroom

Finally, one should consider how the distribution of electrical installation will translate into the comfort of using specific rooms. In the case of the bedroom, connections for night lamps and chargers should be provided. Ideally, the electrical installation in a single-family home should include sockets on both sides of the bed. It is also worth having space for one main circuit for lighting and several secondary circuits for accent lighting or wall sconces.

Electrical Installation in an Apartment with a Multimedia Room

Living rooms or day rooms are now filled to the brim with electronics. That is why they are increasingly referred to as multimedia rooms. An electrical installation in a home with a television, computer, home theater, and a multitude of other devices will require at least 4 electrical sockets on each wall. The lighting should be similar to that found in bedrooms. The same will apply in offices, workshops, and similar rooms.

Electrical Installation in the Bathroom

This is a special type of room. Leading the electrical installation in the bathroom requires the use of YDYp 3×2.5 mm² wires. Sockets must be located near the sink and washing machine. In many cases, one main light fixture is sufficient, although two secondary fixtures can also be installed.

Laying Electrical Installation in the Kitchen

Just like in the bathroom, one cannot do without YDYp 3×2.5 mm² cables. However, the number of sockets should be greater. The installation of electrical systems in a home with a kitchen includes at least 5 sockets, one for each commonly used appliance: stove, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and kettle. If a hot plate is planned, it is better to invest in YDYp 5x4mm² wires. The lighting can be the same as in the bathroom.

Domestic Electrical Work in Hallways

In this case, there is no need to install a larger number of sockets. The laying of electrical installation in a home follows the rule: one socket for every 5 meters. Stairs should have one socket at the top and one at the bottom. A interesting solution is the use of cross switches, which allow the light to be turned on at the beginning of the hallway/stairs and turned off at the end with another switch.

How to Make an Electrical Installation in a Home with a Garage?

A home garage or workshop is not just a place to store a car. Basic repair work is also carried out here. Therefore, the electrical installation must take into account numerous tools and proper lighting. At least two ceiling light sources and four sockets for power tools placed near the workbench will be needed. It is also a good idea to have one three-phase socket at the gate, which facilitates the connection of large outdoor devices, such as a concrete mixer or welder.

Home Electrical Installation on the Terrace

On the terrace, it is worth planning two light sources and one socket with splash protection (IP 54 protection class). This allows for the connection of, for example, a radio. It is also worth considering lighting for the entrance and exit to the building. Light switches for outdoor lighting can be located inside the house.

Can You Carry Out a DIY Electrical Installation in Your Home?

This is definitely a bad idea. Although many people have sufficient knowledge about electricity to handle some repairs or other tasks related to the electrical installation in their apartment, this certainly will not prevent them from making mistakes. And we are often talking about mistakes that are dangerous to human safety. Therefore, even if one knows how to do electrical work in a home, it is better to entrust this task to professionals. Moreover, the law requires it – electrical installations in single-family homes or apartments can only be created by individuals with the appropriate qualifications.

Fortunately, the cost of this task is not high. Professionals price it individually. So there is no possibility of overpaying for the service. In return, you get a guarantee that the electrical installation will be safe and in accordance with the rules of the trade.
