What is the recommended humidity level in the home? General information

Comfort and well-being in an apartment are influenced not only by the arrangement of space and functional furniture but also by factors invisible to the eye. One of them is undoubtedly the proper level of air humidity, which we usually remember during the autumn-winter season. If we do not take care to maintain the desired humidity, our respiratory tract will soon begin to show the first symptoms of illness. Therefore, in today’s article, we will present basic information about medical recommendations in this area. What should the humidity be in an apartment so that it does not pose a health risk even during the heating season? How can we ensure that the optimal air humidity is kept under control, regardless of the conditions outside?

Optimal air humidity – why is it so important?

People unfamiliar with this topic may be quite surprised to learn that humidity in the home has a colossal impact on the health of those inside. However, medical analyses leave no room for doubt – both excessively dry and excessively humid air can cause many respiratory diseases. Fortunately, these problems can be avoided if we only realize the impact of water contained in the air on the human body. Our body is composed of 60-70% water, which conditions, among other things, the proper functioning of the mucous membranes of the nose and sinuses. These, in turn, play a key role in filtering pollutants absorbed from the air. If the air absorbed by the body during breathing is too dry, the nasal mucosa will not be able to effectively protect against viruses, bacteria, or dust mites. This leads directly to troublesome upper respiratory infections, which tend to have a prolonged course and become chronic. Dry air has a very negative effect on the skin, resulting in allergies, inflammation, or itching and burning sensations.

Let’s remember that too low humidity in the home creates an ideal environment for the spread of dust mites and microorganisms. The lower the humidity in the home, the more harmful particles are suspended in the air, which are then inhaled by passing individuals. The dried nasal mucosa cannot mount an effective defense. If we do not know what the recommended humidity level is inside residential rooms, the effects of this ignorance will become visible just a few weeks after a sudden drop in humidity. The heating season proves to be particularly dangerous for the health of the nose, sinuses, and skin. Why is this happening? The desire to ensure thermal comfort (and the significant pollution from nearby chimneys) effectively discourages us from opening windows. At the same time, radiators begin to operate at maximum capacity. Optimal air humidity under such conditions cannot exist, which is why we must change our approach and implement solutions that will allow us to maintain it at the desired level.

So far, we have only described the health consequences of improper humidity in the home. We must not forget that the recommended humidity level is also an important factor in maintaining furniture in good condition. Dry air quickly leads to cracks in wooden elements. Excessively humid air can cause mold, fungi, or peeling paint and laminate.

We will discuss what the humidity level in the home should be in the further part of our considerations. We hope you now realize the immense role that this seemingly insignificant parameter plays in our health and well-being. Proper air humidity in the home reduces the risk of seasonal illnesses or respiratory allergies, which in itself is a sufficient recommendation to take care of proper humidity in residential spaces.

How to measure air humidity in the home?

Before taking any action, you must first know what the current humidity level in your home is. For this purpose, a hygrometer is used, which is a specialized device that measures humidity parameters in real-time. A hygrometer is usually an integral part of air humidifiers, which feature autonomous operation. Data from the hygrometer sent to the humidifier is analyzed by software. Its task is to adjust the intensity of humidification in such a way that the proper air humidity in the home remains stable. The hygrometer not only indicates what the current humidity level in the home is but also provides data on indoor and outdoor temperatures (when a sensor is installed outside).

What should the humidity be in the apartment?

It’s time to answer the question posed in the title of this article – what should the humidity be in the apartment? The minimum humidity level should never drop below 35%. However, the optimal air humidity for humans and animals falls within the range of 40-60%. The temperature in all rooms is also important, which should not exceed 22-23 degrees Celsius. The recommended water vapor content in the air can be achieved using dedicated humidifiers equipped with hygrometers and operating based on parameters set by the user. This way, we can be sure that favorable conditions for health will prevail in the home, and microorganisms and dust mites will be kept in check.
