How it works

How do heating mats work?

  1. 01

    Power supply

When the heating is switched on, current flows through the heating cable laid on the mat's mesh.

  2. 02

    Heat generation

The heating cables in the mat heat up quickly, converting electrical energy into heat.

  3. 03

    Heating the tiles

Heat from the mat warms the tiles quickly and evenly.

  4. 04

    Heat release

The warm tiles release heat evenly into the room.

Traditional water-based heating

The high thermal inertia of the screed means the floor can take several hours to warm up.

TERMOFOL heating mats

Electric heating cables warm the tiles quickly and evenly – you can feel the first warmth after just 15 minutes or so.

Construction

What is a TERMOFOL heating mat made of?

The heating mat combines the heating cable with a flexible mounting mesh to form a ready-made system designed to be installed directly under the tiles.

  1. 1

    Self-adhesive fibreglass mesh

It forms the base of the mat and allows it to be laid quickly and securely on the subfloor.

  2. 2

    Heating cable

A twin-conductor cable, 3.6 mm in diameter, generates the heat.

  3. 3

    Mounting tapes

They hold the heating cable at the correct spacing on the mesh.

  4. 4

    Power cable

The 2 m cable connects the mat to the thermostat and the electrical installation.

The heating mat doesn't need to cover the whole floor

Choose the mat according to the area to be heated, not the total floor area of the room.

Plan the mat layout:

- keep at least 10 cm from the walls

- leave out areas under fixed furniture and appliances

- the heating cables must not cross or touch

- place the floor sensor 40–60 cm from the wall, between the heating cables

- when fitting the mat, you may cut the mesh but never the heating cable.

  • In practice, the heating mat usually covers about 70–80% of the available floor area.

The TERMOTERM XPS boards form an insulating layer under the underfloor heating system, limiting heat flow towards the subfloor. Different thicknesses let you match the solution to the floor structure and the available height.

  • Thickness 4–30 mm
  • Less heat loss

Floor finish

Tiles, porcelain stoneware or stone?

TERMOFOL heating mats work with a range of floor finishes – from ceramic tiles and porcelain stoneware to natural stone.

Ceramic tiles

Porcelain stoneware tiles

Natural stone

To lay tiles over the heating mat, use a flexible adhesive suitable for underfloor heating. The adhesive must fully surround the heating cable, leaving no voids.

Control

Every room can have its own temperature

The thermostat is the heart of the system.

It controls the temperature and the heating operation in each room. Depending on the model, you can set schedules and control it remotely, among other things.

How to Choose a Heating Mat for a Room? A Practical Guide

Choosing the right heating mat is more important than many investors realize. The selection of an appropriate heating mat should not be based solely on the area of the room. In practice, other factors also play a significant role: the heating function, type of flooring, insulation standard of the building, actual heating area, and the way the interior is used. That is why a well-chosen underfloor heating system operates comfortably, efficiently, and energy-saving for many years […]

Today, from the market perspective, it is clear that their role has significantly changed. Investors increasingly view electric underfloor heating as a conscious element of modern construction, rather than just a comfortable addition.
