Are you looking for a way to cool down your apartment on hot days? An air conditioner on the balcony is the perfect solution. Find out what types of air conditioning are available and which one is worth choosing.

Air Conditioner on the Balcony – Why is it Worth Having?

The last decade has seen a drastic increase in temperatures in Poland. This is particularly felt by city dwellers, who, due to numerous buildings, have to deal with much higher readings on the thermometer. Installing an air conditioner on the balcony brings many benefits, the most important of which is your thermal comfort both in summer and winter.

For this reason, portable air conditioners for balconies have gained significant popularity in recent years. These devices are particularly valued for their energy efficiency and ease of use, making them an ideal choice for those looking for quick solutions and savings. Moreover, such an air conditioner on the balcony in an apartment building is also a chance to avoid interfering with the building's structure, thus avoiding troublesome renovations. However, the installation method is crucial – proper installation contributes to increasing the efficiency of the entire device. With the right configuration, it is possible to maximize the cooling potential while minimizing energy consumption.

The efficiency of air conditioning depends not only on proper installation but also on choosing the right model of the device. A portable air conditioner on the balcony can be an attractive option for those looking for a solution that does not require permanent installation and is easy to move if necessary. Such devices are characterized by flexibility, which is an advantage in limited spaces.

How else can air conditioning benefit you? The balcony is an ideal place to install a device that will not only provide pleasant coolness in the summer. It is also a good way to heat. In the case of an apartment in a block or tenement an air conditioner on the balcony can serve as an additional source of heat by connecting it to the municipal heating network. However, if you live in an old tenement in the city center, it is highly likely that access to municipal heating is difficult or even impossible. In such cases, a portable air conditioner may be the right solution for you.

Air conditioning is also an excellent way to improve indoor air quality. Modern devices are equipped with filters and air purification systems that help eliminate allergens, pollutants, and unpleasant odors, providing you and your family with a healthier environment.

Installing an air conditioner on the balcony is a decision that can bring a range of benefits – from financial savings to improved quality of life and health aspects.

Installing an Air Conditioner on the Balcony – What Types of Air Conditioning Are There?

Understanding the operating mechanism of the technology that is an air conditioner on the balcony is key to optimizing its efficiency and user comfort. The heart of every device is a system that removes warm air from inside the apartment and replaces it with cooler air. The outdoor unit, placed in the balcony space, should be well-ventilated. A lack of proper airflow can lead to overheating of the system and damage to the device.

The operation of an air conditioner is based on the principle of the refrigeration cycle, which utilizes a physical phenomenon where a liquid absorbs heat during evaporation and then releases it during condensation.

In short, the operation of an air conditioner can be described in the following steps:

  1. Compression. The refrigerant (working substance in gas form) is compressed by the compressor, which increases its temperature and pressure.
  2. Condensation. The hot gas under high pressure flows through the condenser (external heat exchanger), where it releases heat to the environment and condenses, turning into a liquid.
  3. Expansion. The condensed refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, causing a drop in its pressure and temperature.
  4. Evaporation. The cool refrigerant in liquid form flows through the evaporator (internal heat exchanger), where it absorbs heat from the air inside the room. In this process, the refrigerant evaporates, returning to gas form.

This cycle repeats, resulting in a decrease in temperature and partial drying of the air in the room.

Types of Air Conditioners

There are various types of air conditioning systems available on the market, differing in design and operating principle.

  • Monoblock
    • They are characterized by a compact size, with all key components enclosed in one device.
    • The main advantage is ease of installation, without the need for complicated assembly work.
    • You just need to place them near a window and ensure air is vented outside through a hole in the wall or a ventilation duct.
  • Split
    • This is the most popular type, consisting of separate indoor and outdoor units.
    • They are distinguished by high efficiency, while avoiding energy losses through open windows, as is the case with monoblock devices.
    • The connection between units is made using copper pipes, allowing for continuous flow of the refrigerant.
  • Multisplit
    • They allow for connecting multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit.
    • They enable the creation of an advanced cooling system for multiple rooms, using only one outdoor unit.
    • They offer great flexibility in configuration, adapting to the specific needs of the user.

Air Conditioning on the Balcony – Noise and Permission

An air conditioner is a significant investment, so it should be tailored to specific needs and conditions. Many factors influence the final decision, from the type of device to its efficiency, as well as installation and operation issues.

First of all, consider whether a permanently standing air conditioner on the balcony would be a better choice? Or perhaps a portable air conditioner on the balcony? Standing devices are often more efficient. On the other hand, portable models offer greater flexibility. Installing an air conditioner on the balcony involves ensuring proper airflow for the outdoor unit and the ability to drain condensed air. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the availability of space and possible installation methods.

There is one more issue if you are interested in air conditioning on the balcony. Permission for its installation may be required in some housing cooperatives and communities. Approval is granted based on the internal regulations of the property manager.

Air Conditioning and Noise

One cannot forget another aspect associated with air conditioning on the balcony. The noise generated by this device can be bothersome to neighbors – especially if you live in densely built urban areas, such as blocks or tenements. The sound generated by the air conditioner can also be a problem at home if the neighboring building is close to your device. Models designed to minimize noise can significantly improve the quality of life.

Noise Standards for Air Conditioning

According to the regulation issued by the Minister of the Environment on June 14, 2007, regarding noise limits, all manufacturers of external air conditioning units are obliged to comply with specified maximum sound levels emitted by these devices. The purpose of this regulation is to protect the environment from excessive deterioration of the quality of life.

Sound levels, measured in decibels (dB), are a key factor influencing the use of air conditioners. Specialized agencies and manufacturers are responsible for measuring these values, which must then be made available to customers during the purchase or installation of the device.

According to the regulations, the noise standards for air conditioners during the day are:

  • 55 dB in multi-family buildings,
  • 50 dB in single-family buildings.

At night, both standards are reduced by 10 dB. It should be noted that the above values apply to external devices.

For air conditioners located indoors, the values for both types of buildings are:

  • 40 dB during the day,
  • 30 dB at night.
