Photovoltaic Farm – Is It Worth It? Photovoltaics

Today, photovoltaic farms are being established all over the world in various forms and sizes – from small ones that illuminate local communities to gigantic solar farms on a utility scale, powering thousands of homes. In just the last decade, the use of solar energy has recorded an average annual growth of 49%. This is largely due to the increasing popularity of investing in ventures such as photovoltaic farms. The profitability of this investment remains a mystery for many people. We explain what a photovoltaic farm is, how it works, and whether it brings profits.

Everything You Need to Know About Investing in a Photovoltaic Farm

Today, photovoltaic farms are being established all over the world in various forms and sizes – from small ones that illuminate local communities to gigantic solar farms on a utility scale, powering thousands of homes. In just the last decade, the use of solar energy has recorded an average annual growth of 49%. This is largely due to the increasing popularity of investing in ventures such as photovoltaic farms. The profitability of this investment remains a mystery for many people. We explain what a photovoltaic farm is, how it works, and whether it brings profits.

How Does a Solar Power Plant Work?

Many people, before asking about the profitability of a photovoltaic farm, want to understand how this installation works. The principle is very simple. Photovoltaic panels generate energy directly from sunlight. When the sun shines on the panels, the semiconductors within them are stimulated to produce energy – a photoelectric effect occurs. PV modules generate direct current, which is then converted into alternating current by an inverter and fed into the power grid.

Photovoltaic panels are mounted on the ground on special frames. They can also be installed on a so-called single-axis tracking system, which allows the modules to rotate in such a way as to follow the sunlight. However, this solution is usually only utilized by really advanced, large, and modern solar power plants. The profitability of such a system for smaller investments is questionable, as it increases the cost of building the solar farm.

Photovoltaic Farm Profitability – What Influences It?

If we want to invest capital in a solar power plant, it is worth first understanding the factors that significantly affect the future profits from this venture. A very important step is choosing the right land. A well-located plot will increase the profit from the photovoltaic farm. What characteristics should the optimal land for constructing the described installation have? First of all, it must be located close enough to power lines to allow for connection to the power grid. The land itself should be flat, unshaded, and classified as class IV or lower.

Depending on the size of the photovoltaic farm, it is also necessary to determine the size of the plot on which it will be installed. A smaller photovoltaic farm may require only two hectares of land. Abroad, it is common for every megawatt of power to require between 2 to 3 hectares of land. At the planning stage of the solar power plant, the profitability of the venture can be increased by securing a slightly larger area of land than the minimum required. This will enhance flexibility in arranging the panels and designating intersystem connection corridors, as well as allow for potential expansion of the installation's capacity.

Photovoltaic Farm Profits – How Much Can You Earn from Solar Energy?

Today, an increasing number of aware investors are not asking about the profitability of photovoltaic farms, but about the actual profits from them. A well-designed, located, and executed installation provides significant financial benefits, but it is difficult to provide exact figures in this case. Too many factors influence how much money a photovoltaic farm will generate. Profits are usually estimated based on the return on investment, which typically occurs after about 10 years, yielding a profitability rate of around 10%.

However, it is important to utilize government funding programs during the implementation of this venture whenever possible, as they significantly contribute to achieving satisfactory profits. It is also advisable to conduct such investments with the support of specialists who will comprehensively handle the design and execution of the installation. They will also assist in estimating the optimal capacity of the solar farm.

Certainly, an important aspect regarding profits is owning your own land that meets the previously described standards, on which the photovoltaic farm will be built. The profitability of the investment in this case will significantly increase. One should not forget about other non-financial positive aspects of investing in a solar power plant. This solution helps reduce low emissions, generates no noise, is highly reliable, and is practically maintenance-free. Importantly, after the power plant ceases to operate, the entire installation can be dismantled with virtually no damage to the land.
