Many homeowners are unaware of the significant impact thermal modernization has on heating cost savings. Although it is unfortunately an expensive investment, it is necessary. Fortunately, we know ways to finance such work!
Thermal Modernization – What Does It Actually Mean?
Thermal modernization of a house is a process aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the building. In short, it is a kind of facelift for our apartment aimed at minimizing heat loss and reducing heating costs. Solutions related to comprehensive thermal modernization include a range of actions, and the effectiveness of this process can be compared to switching from an outdated car model to a modern and economical vehicle.
Let’s start with thermal insulation. Just like the clothes we wear to protect ourselves from the cold, proper insulation protects our home from heat loss. In winter, it keeps heat inside, and in summer, it maintains coolness, which has a huge impact on heating and air conditioning expenses.
Comprehensive thermal modernization may also include the replacement of window joinery. Windows are, in a sense, the "eyes" of the house, but also a source of potential heat loss. Modern, energy-efficient windows act like a thermos, keeping heat inside the rooms and protecting against the cold from outside. This is an investment that pays off not only in savings but also in increasing the comfort of living. It is also worth mentioning technologies related to modern heating systems, which also fall under the concept of thermal modernization. An example could be the installation of infrared heating, which utilizes thermal radiation. This is also an ecological heating method, as it eliminates the need for burning wood or coal.
What is a passive house and why is it the future of construction?
Thermal modernization of a house is a key step towards savings, comfort, and environmental care. It can be compared to refreshing our apartment, giving it a modern character and making it more friendly to our wallets and the planet.
Thermal Modernization of a House and Its Importance
In the face of growing challenges related to climate change and the pursuit of sustainable energy consumption, comprehensive thermal modernization is a milestone in the energy revolution of houses and apartments.
The main goal of thermal modernization of a house is to minimize heat loss and ensure optimal thermal insulation. A common question that arises is “what heating system to choose for an old house?” The answer depends on many factors, including location, type of building, and individual preferences of the owner. Contact Termofol experts who will help you choose the right system.
In the case of older houses, it is often necessary to replace radiators and replace the radiator thermostat to adapt the heating system to modern efficiency standards. Modern radiators and thermostats allow for precise temperature control in individual rooms, which translates into user comfort.
Changing the Heating Source and Integrating Different Systems
As technology and ecological awareness develop, some consider changing their heating source. How to convert a coal stove to electric? How to connect an electric stove with a coal stove? These questions require careful analysis and professional advice. However, one thing is certain – converting a coal stove to an electric stove is a process that must be carried out with due attention.

How to Heat a House Without a Stove? What to Replace Burning With?
Changing the heating method also creates an opportunity to rethink how to heat a house without a stove. In this context, it is also worth considering infrared heating. In terms of sustainability, the question of what to replace burning in the stove takes on particular significance. Infrared heating is an ecological alternative that not only reduces harmful emissions but also helps to lower heating bills.
An infrared-based heating system is one of the types of installations that do not require a chimney. However, eliminating an old and outdated heat source is an expensive investment, just like thermal modernization. Therefore, it is worth looking into numerous funding programs for insulating the house.
The “Clean Air” Program
The “Clean Air” program, introduced in 2019, has been updated this year, increasing the availability of funds for thermal modernization projects. The new version of the program brought an increase in both the amount of funding and the percentage of support. Grants now oscillate between 40% and 100%.
Additionally, the program provides extra funding of 1200 PLN for conducting a mandatory energy audit.
Clean Air Plus
Financial support for thermal modernization, known as “Clean Air Plus,” which is part of the “Clean Air” program, offers funds provided even before the start of thermal modernization work. However, it is necessary to sign a contract with the chosen contractor beforehand.
In the case of applying for funding with pre-financing, its assessment takes place within 14 days of submission, and partial payment of funds to the contractor's account is made within the next 2 days. The beneficiary can apply for funding with pre-financing for a maximum of three contracts with contractors. The grant, which can amount to up to 50%, is transferred to the contractor's account within a month of submitting the funding application or 14 days before the investment starts.
Thermal Modernization Relief
Alternatively, there is also the possibility of taking advantage of thermal modernization relief, which allows for deducting expenses related to thermal modernization from income. The period for carrying out the thermal modernization cannot exceed 3 years. The maximum amount that can be deducted is 53,000 PLN, with the amount doubling in the case of a marriage. Therefore, it is essential to consider these expenses when filing the annual PIT tax return.
Local Financing
It is also worth visiting the municipality relevant to your place of residence to find out if it has its own funding program. Many municipalities in Poland organize support for people looking for additional sources. Such programs are essentially available in all major cities in the country, including Wrocław, Warsaw, and Poznań.
In addition to the thermal modernization work itself, local authorities allocate support for energy audits. An energy audit is a comprehensive examination of the energy efficiency of a given facility, system, or process. The aim of the audit is to identify areas where improvements can be made to save energy, optimize consumption, and reduce costs. Therefore, the energy audit includes an analysis of both the technical and economic aspects of energy consumption.
